How do you join the SRA ??? ::) ive emailed them but i dont get a reply
does anyone know how i can join, or what i need to do?
are you selling? cause they want either your website address or a link to where you sell so they can check you out
i know it can take a while cause the woman who runs it dose so free of charge and it depends what else is going on in her life, all i can say is wait
Thanks Caroline, thats probs why as i dont sell anything yet but i will be selling soon ;)
I'm not selling and I got membership. I just had to prove I was making glass beads by sending a picture of my workspace, my eBay and JustBeads ID, and a picture of my beads. I explained I was in the process of building a website (waiting on James so taking FOREVER) that I was making beads in my kitchen and advised what the website domain would be. It took about 6 weeks in total and a month of that was waiting for the email back asking for proof.
I emailed ages ago too, but no reply...I have a website!
I applied & got membership within about 2 days - same for the SRAJD, but my business partner had to wait about a week. Guess the timing was just right.
Marie who runs the site was busy having a baby and moving house but she is back up and running now so I reckon it will all be speeded up, be quicker if you provide proof of what you do and/or have a website otherwise she doesen't know who you are and the whole point is to avoid the mass produced stuff getting in.
I gave it up as a bad job!
just try again - my friend did & she is now registered.
Yes, Sam try agian, I tried a few months ago and was about to give up, then I sent about 3 emails in sucession and that did the trick.
I got a reply this morning about this which says: "Before we can issue an SRA number we need to verify that your work fits our criteria."
They asked for pics of my work and studio etc which is fine and I have sent those, but checking that the 'work fits our criteria' does that mean they decide whether your beads are 'good enough'?
As far as I know it is just to ascertain that you are actually making them yourself....
I could be wrong though ?? I joined the scheme aaaaages back now.. maybe they have changed or tightened their criteria up a little.. ??
Dunno...

No, if it's the site I think it is, all they want to do is make sure it's made by you and not imported! But it can take a while, as it's all checked by her and a few helpers one at a time, and everyone has their own stuff to take care of as well as volunteering for the SRA duties. :)
ok cool :D thanks girls hopefully I will be ok then ;D
The response I got when I sent a picture of my beads was that the ends appeared good and the designs were nice and clean. I was asked to send three pictures of my beads - were you..? As no two beads will be identical this is further proof the beads are made by hand and not mass produced (which is also why they want to see the picture of your workspace). Hope this puts your mind at rest. I think the basic requirement is that the beads are "artist" made and there will be several indications from your pictures to confirm this. Bethany (Gwacie) helps out with the registrations, as does Su Poole so they may be able to shed more light as to whether there is a standard your beads need to meet.
Please don't give up. I read somewhere that one of the ladies who processes applications only does it every so many weeks. My friend waited several weeks and mine was processed within a week - same time as hers.
Don't despair I am sure you will hear soon.
Thanks Billie :) It was Bethany that contacted me and she said the best pics to send were ones that were posted on a forum. I sent her the link to the wave tut thread with my purple group in them. I hope they will be good enough to pass muster!
I sent her the (tidy version) of my studio pic too :)
i just have a horrible fear of them saying 'oh they're crap you need a LOT more practice' ;D
I was nervous too. I'd only been on the torch 6 weeks and the pictures I sent her were my 3rd, 4th and 5th set of beads so the designs were very basic (I think you can see a picture of them in a thread asking for pictures of our first beads a while back) ;D ;D
*goes to take a peeK*
Q had to post them on behalf as I couldn't get the pictures to upload... can't remember the thread title now but it was a couple of months back at least... ;)
can't find it! :-[ will keep looking though....

This was one of them
Looks good to me :) Love that green!
I process the applications for last names starting from A-F. I do it as and when I have time, but my remit is strictly to check out that the person applying makes their own glass work. I don't judge quality, quantity or anything else.
I spent two hours this morning, because a number of applications did not give a single link to anything, just an eBay ID (some of them never had an item sold on eBay either, just purchases) and some had 'website in progress' and one had a nasty note asking why it took more than a week to get the number.
It's a voluntary thing, I do it as and when I have spare time, and I'm happy to do what I do.
If you apply, make it easy for yourself and the person who is going to have to process your application.
Give a link to every answer. If you have an eBay ID, put the link to your ID in the application. If you have a website, put the link in, if you have images somewhere, please put in a clickable link. I spend more than half my time simply doing searches on names, and I'd get through the fifteen applications I did today in half the time if people thought a bit more about how they send in their application.
If you want to have an SRA number, it's easy to do, we don't judge the quality of the work, just that you really DO make your own glass work.
Anyone who is waiting for a number, with a last name from A-F who hasn't been given one or emailed by me, I don't know where your application is because I am now up to date on all the applications sent to me. So if you're waiting, re-send your application with the links in it to make things faster. And that goes for anyone, sending them out to any of the people doing this on a voluntary basis. If you make it easy to check, then it's less work and a shorter time to get things done.
Hope this helps.
-Su
Thanks Su, that's really helpful :) :) :)
Aw, I'm H :( when are the H's being done???
& thank you to you guys who give up your free time to do it for us ;D
I just got mine from Bethany...yayy for me I got a number ;D
you must be soon Vicki ....seeing as I am G....Bethany must have your application :)
Oooh I hope so ;D
Hiya gang. I have letter G thru L for the SRA project. Ditto to what Su said for the most part.
I believe all applications (or most) are first filtered through Melinda, who's genius created the project and who's baby it is as it were. So first Melinda has to get time to sort thru her inbox and filter the applications out our way or direct you.
Once the applications get to the right volunteer you then wait on our lives (grin). I usually like to wait until I have a couple at least to process at a time. I've had 12 processed successfully that came in since last night and have 2 or 3 that I need more info on still. We are not judging the quality of your work, just that it is your own work as Su said. However, that being said, it's a little trickier with newbie beads since sometimes (don't be hurt or insulted) they can look like imported beads a bit. That's why I always ask for a photo of the work space and 3 bead photos. I figure if you have a workspace you must be making beads, eh?
If you have sent in an application and haven't heard back by all means resubmit or if you know who handles your part of the alphabet contact that person. In this day and age of spam filters I believe many can get lost on their way to us ultimately.
Vicki I have no application from you in my box, fyi unless it's one that just was processed last night?
ETA that I second the request to make it easier on us to find your work. We aren't judging you but how, other than photos, can we know if you are an importer who is trying to get a number for legitimacy (I've actually had 2 of those so far) or a real SRA? I suppose we could just make you send a beads (grin).
Oohh.. now that's just plain naughty... ;)
:-[ Aw I emailed 3 times...who deals with H, please could you PM there email address pretty please...kissy kissy slurp ;D
Ooop, I just read properly, silly me :)
yours will be the wet email then Vicki!
Got your info and processed Vicki. You should have an email from me.
Yippeee, thank you Bethany ;D

what letter does your last name start with Carol?
Thanks for going to so much trouble for us guys Bethany :)
No trouble. I just hate that folks get a bad opinion of the project which is, IMHO one of the better volunteer things ever started for SRA bead sellers.

When I buying glass the other day I noticed SRA being promoted on the homepages.....New Zealand has one (the land of Gaffer Glass ;D ;D), not sure about Oz...think they have hehe
carol douglas thank you
Hey there Carol, you'll need to contact Su. I'll send you a pm with info.
I'm a "W", I've applied more than a few times, ensured both my website link, ebay and etsy was included and the most recent application sent something like 8 different pics of my studio, me making beads and the actual beads as well! I've never even had a reply from anyone as a result of all my emails! Any idea who is supposed to be looking after the "W"'s?

Sent you a pm - you need to contact Jane.
Thanks for all your help Bethany. Can FH members see from the site who looks after which letters of the alphabet rather than you fielding everyone's requests? Just worried about you taking more enquiries on :)
I don't think so. However I created a "form" letter msg today with all the needed info so it's no biggie for me to PM the info to folks who are in need. I don't feel comfy posting the SRA team emails publically before you ask (grin).

Hell no! :o :o I just saw on the SRA site it listed the administrators but not what sections of the alphabet they covered :)
I'm getting nowhere :'(
I think it may be my fault, because I emailed Su for Funky Cow, but am thinking I should have contacted whoever does T for Throup :'(
I have a website which I linked in my email, and have recently sold on ebay (without an SRA recognition coz I got fed up of waiting :()
I've given up too. Been trying for 3 months. ;D
Heather, don't give up. I waited 3-4 months then I sent consecutive emails until I got a reply. Didn't take long after that.
I got my SRA number ;D
woohoo!
Congratulations Cathryn!

I just thought I'd post this reply I got, it might save people lots of time trying to work out who to send their info to.
I haven't applied yet as I'm just a newbie but I'm planning in dong so as soon as I get any beads made.
Jessie

Sent mine off today too :o
I would like to register for SRA membership.
Most of the info on here seems to be from 2007 and I assume now has been superceded.
The page I found was
http://www.self-representing-artist.com/membership.htm (http://www.self-representing-artist.com/membership.htm)
Is this the correct one - I wondered if I had missed a UK one?
My surname begins with P
Thanks for any help.
Janet
Go for it Janet. I sent my application off Monday evening and got the reply Wednesday morning. The lady (or gent, don't want to discriminate or insult anyone) that handles the Ps is really on the ball.
I'm SRA P97!
I applied on 12/4/10 but have not heard back yet, although it may take longer as I don't have a website, I just sent photos.
:)
I don't have my own website either, just sent photos of the kitchen table covered in glassy bits, the kiln, then links to flickr, etsy and youcraftylot.com.
I sent off my SRA application a week ago. It came through today. Now I feel legit.
Thank you for the speedy response SRA peeps.
I need to update my SRA number really ... I've changed website and surname since I registered .. oops :P
