The theme of the month challenge is jointly sponsored by Tuffnells Glass (thank you Martin et al!) and Frit Happens!
Each month the lucky winner, chosen by a random number selector, will receive a £20 gift voucher to spend on-line with Tuffnells. The draw will take place at the start of **October** so make sure you get your entries in before midnight on the last day of September to be in with a chance to win the goodies!
Please note that the entries should be new work.
So, the theme for the month for September 2013 is Birds.
ooooooohhhh Madeline taught me how to do chickens, though whether I can do it again without her standing behind me telling me I can I'm not sure!!!!
shall I stand here and tell you you can instead? course you can!
Cool!
Can I start you off with a couple of silly birds that came out of the kiln yesterday?

good start, and yes I want to see the Pauline interpretation of Madeline's chickens
Here are a couple of chicken brooches left over from a recent commission....

Oh oh oh, I know!!!!
This is going to be a good one ! Love the birds already posted :)
Let the fun begin!
ok I've got a chicken cooking, whether she will survive in 1 piece is another question
where were you Madeline? I either didn't cook her enough before she went into cook, or it was the overshoot to 535 when I tried to skip a segment after she had been garaging for 2 hours so here she is on mandrel before it gets any worse

:( :( :(
Pauline, if she's not got any worse, I'd be tempted to put her back into a cold kiln and rework her. There's lots about her that is good so you won't lose anything by having a go but take a picture first just in case.
I'm with Pat, there is a lot about her that is good!
I would say it does look like a warming issue, I'm guessing you were worried about losing her face, tis a good face!
look forward to seeing the next one!
Aww she is really lovely what a shame about the crack :(
What a shame!! Other wise she's great!
That chicken is awesome - great character! Good luck fixing her (or with the next one)!
Here's my little contribution... a little portly chap :)

A little Wren. This is I think my third attempt at making a birdy so be kind please .:)
Great start .... There were a few more made yesterday at Angie's open studio!
Hi Skyblue. Great body shape and I love the colour - very subtle.
Thanks Jane :)
I am still a proper newbie to this lampwork lark so have decided to keep it simple and consulted the 6 year old me in how best to make a bird bead and we both decided that a 'M' shaped bird with a sun and sunbeams was the only way forward ;D
I hope you like it :D
(http://i.imgur.com/bHbrrF2l.jpg)
One of the sunbeams broke off when I was taking him off the mandrel, poop!!
It is a very cute bead :) Very sunny, nice idea!
I was thinking about making something with M-shaped birds as well, since I haven't done any sculpting yet.. But I haven't had the time :P

Thank you ladies :)
He was a lot of fun to make and I must admit I was giggling like a little kid making him ;D
He isn't a patch on everyone else's though! I love the sneaky bubble Flowerjasper! ;)
Very cute sandy x
Yes, it is super cute. I want to cuddle it! :-*
I initially made these to enter this month's theme challenge, but now I'm also selling them to raise a bit of money to buy a kiln (on my facebook page). These are my first 'sculptural' beads (though I haven't really sculpted anything - just placed a lot of dots, haha). The wire wrappings that dangle beneath the birds' bodies are supposed to resemble legs. I've made 2 more grey birdy-beads and perhaps I will etch those ones and make another pair of earrings.

Just love the earrings they are so cute.
A turtle dove from me - it comes with much swearing and a taurus saw added to my christmas list :D

I absolutely love your Dove. Very serene!
That's gorgeous Jeannette x
Yeske I love the legs on those little birds.
Here's my first ever attempt at an owl!
White / Goldstone ribbon / Clear / Millefiori / silver black
I'm really pleased I managed to keep the goldstone sparkly. It's also the biggest bead I've made to date!
Awww Jane I love your owl he is so sparkly xxxx
It's a very cute owl :) he seems very happy ;)
Thank you!
Hmmmmmmm - sparkly!
loving all the different birds!
its hard for me to choose which bird design of mine I'd add here, since I have several! but as this is supposed to be a challenge, and new work, here is my latest owl, sorry if you saw him already in the gallery! it has been a long time coming, for me to mix my silver glass beads with my sculptural in this way, and I'm really pleased! Silver glass chickens are next! I have made two but no time (or proper daylight!) for pics just now.

I wrote a blog post about some of my design process if you are interested.
I love your owl Madeline and I would be very interested in your blog.
Anything has to be better than an "M" shaped bird!! ???
Lovely birds, especially your owl Madeline.
Here's mine - a little blue bird :)

Love everyone's birds! They are all so different, and so charming.
Sculptural isn't really my thing, so my effort is a little different. It's also my first try with the uranium yellow pastel that I got last year and was too scared to use in case I 'wasted' it! I'm pleased with this little chap though.

Apologies for the blurred photo but he really should be in those bubbles not hanging about for a photo call. I'll put him in front of the camera again when he comes off the mandrel. I was contemplating birds and a way to make one whilst stuck in traffic today, I had to come home and fire up the torch to have a go (Yes, I have gas again, almost half the price of a popular DIY chain, I'm hoping its ok...)
And here he is off his mandrel and in focus

There are some really cute little birds on here !:)
Love your owl Jane - it's the expression - brilliant!
Aww thanks so much everyone!
Madeline - love your "flowl"!
Katherinem - that's really gorgeous - love the way you've managed the inlay effect - I keep going back and looking at it - reminds me a bit of mosaic!
Aww, thanks. The colour variation comes from the reaction between the blue (which I think was grumpy bear) and the pale yellow, and with itself. It took a couple of goes to add the dots and the stringer branch in the right order!
Thanks everyone! ;D
hehe, flowl, like it!
nothing wrong with an M shaped bird Katie...I rather like M's!
blog link is in my sig below if you didn't already find it.
Drum Roll......
The winner for September is....
Katherinem.
Well done. I shall PM you in a mo.
Thank you to everyone that's entered this month's challenge. Ta - Krysia
Congrats
Well done :)
Yay! Happy Dance! :D
That's cheered me right up after dropping a paperweight mid-shaping and burning my finger on it earlier today. Ouch.
Well done KatherineM!
(PS - ouchie - hope your finger gets better soon)
grats :)
Well done & lucky you ;)
well done x
thank you!
My finger is pretty much fine now, I think the glass just touched the skin on the way down to my leather apron - once again I am glad that I wear it, I'm still a bit clumsy with my off mandrel work - haven't yet suppressed the instinct to catch yet either!
