Should you try refusing a piece?

Last week I did some pieces in my kiln. I am still learning how my kiln works and it's hot spots. Some pieces fused more than I had planned and others not really as much.

In particular I did what I hoped would be a pair of earrings with diachroic on purple. On one the diachroic has fused right in (so it spreads and becomes diffused by the top layer) on the other it has remained on top (a very clear dots pattern no diffusion). Now clealry they do not match.

Has anyone ever refused a piece? Wondered if I did that might get the diachroic to move further into the piece and diffuse so they might match.

theres no harm in refusing at all, the result may be different from the other

re-fuse. it might sort it out if you're after a full fuse

Yep - I have refused. My kiln fuses unevenly and makes me swear at it occasionally :-\

I sometimes refuse, but IMHO I'd suggest that you keep a close eye on it as the glass may also spread out a little and you could potentially lose the shape if you let the heat creep up too much. Probably not too much of a concern if you have a digital controller - but if you don't you could end up with odd shapes. Having said that, you should definitely give it a go!

Fingers crossed for you  :)

How about when you fuse something and the bottom layer spreads and the top layer just sits there? Cut off the extra somehow or refuse to try and get top to spread, or act like that is what you meant to happen?

Funky Cow

That's never happened to me ??? Do you cut the top piece slightly larger than the bottom/other layers? I try to do that and then it kinds of 'wraps' around the rest as they fuse

Turn it over and refuse it, or grind it and fire polish?
