This is a pot melt heart made with red and white opaque bullseye flat glass cut into pieces. The melt was into a cut out heart shape in vermiculite board. I've ground and fire polished the edges.

Now for the ridiculous. I wanted to make a penguin. Don't ask why.

The head sheared off while making the tail and feet and this necessitated cooling, reheating and reattaching the head which looked much better before it sheared off. It also didn't help that I picked up the wrong dark rod whilst re assembling the head and beak. I at least have a better idea in what order to assemble the next penguin if I make one. He's just under 51mm tall.
Lots of lovely things already, and it's only Tuesday lunchtime!
I love Sarah's green leaf in particular. And Mel's bead, which made me look at it quite closely - I couldn't quite tell at first if those dots were raised concentric circles viewed at an angle or flatter overlapping ones, I like that effect.
I've been fairly busy at the torch over Christmas. Attempted a wigwag for the first time:

These were done on a cab mandrel and have nuts stuck in the back, like ring toppers. They're intended a part of another project, which I'll share if/when I actually do it.
And also I noticed that I didn't have a pair of black dangly earrings, so here's what I did the remedy this. First version on the left, second version (the one that ended up as earrings) on the right.

I'm still making headpins, this is what I got up to yesterday. I made some dotty drops, some emerald green leaves and experimented with some different colours, a special red and white heart headpin and I had a play at making some rosebud headpins -never made these before, haven't quite worked out how to make a matching pair yet though.

Bought Amanda's Concetric Circle tutorial and had some fun playing with it and used it with a twist rather than a cabachon had a play with marbles and pendants having had a crash course in Marble making from David.....thank you Mango!!

I managed to put a tree on each side with no cracks appearing. Doing both sides is good I think because of how often a pendant will turn when you are wearing it and it ensures I warm both sides of the lentil reducing my chances of cracks.

Wow - I haven't posted much on here for a while - but what great work everyone has put up, lovely hearts, Studio girl :). I particularly love the florals and hearts of Helen G, Gay's gorgeous brooch, Linda's wonderful work (is there nothing you can't turn your hand to, Linda? ;) ). But everyone's work is really lovely - trouble with posting this late in the week I can't remember all everyone's names on the list - but so much gorgeous bead p0rn - lovely to see from everyone.
Got a large knob for my new door - just debating whether or not it will stand up to the winter gales and the summer horde of kids if I put it on the outside of the door. It's maybe the biggest knob (fnarrr! ;D) I've ever made. Sorry, bit of a picture hog:

And finally some crystal beads which I made to test the new DH Thallo. I have to say I only had an initial play, but I'd be hard pushed to tell the difference between it and Gaia. It was kind of weird to work too.. was very resistant to reducing even when I blasted it with a large reduction flame for quite a while....

It wasn't until we got this up that we realised the walls weren't straight! Oh, the assumptions you make... in this case, given that we live in a barn conversion, perhaps we should have guessed..
It is still "better than 't dangly pendant that was there before it" (other half) and really very cheering as you come up the stairs :D All blown borosilicate glass flowers and flameworked leaves, on toughened glass.

This has been a work in progress for over a year since we renovated our bathroom but I finally got round to finishing it. There are a few things I'm not happy with but thanks to Julie (Lush) I'm working on losing my perfectionist streak and lightening up a little so on the whole I'm quite pleased with the effect ;D What do you guys think?

Watching all the beads on this site really gives inspiration. Those beads, Les, look like candy! Yum!
I'm working on lentils and raking so I tried a combo.... The flowers are too small the centre one could be bigger, so thats for the Next one.
I used the same press on both lentils but the amount of glass was not the same, still they both came out looking like lentils so I Guess the amount of glass isn't so importent as I had imagined.

I'm just generally having fun using up shards and ends of rods. The parrot bead used up two rods of yellow and is 64mm long so a bit of silliness on my part.
ok, I've plucked up the courage to post my most recent slightly wonky beads - I'm disproportionately proud of them as its the first time I had an implosion bead and a fishscale pattern work so well and I managed not to burn the bluestone while encasing it (I just have to ignore the not-quite-roundness of the cylinders and the wonky dimples!)

I've been thinking for some time about making this bead. The problem was that the image was so large and I'd lose detail if I reduced it's size. It's another Bronwen Heilman type bead where the image is done with enamels on a clear piece of 104 sheet and then applied to the bead. You pray all the time that the sheet will not crack if you apply it too fast to the bead. I decided to use a clear bead with some greenish shards and this is the result. I had to take 3 photos to get all of the bead, so,

By the time I got round to the tail when making the bead, the head started to appear. The bead is 65.4mm long and 26.9 mm wide. If you look through the bead, you can see the tail starting to appear. I realise it's not everyones cup of tea but the image just intrigued me. Perhaps it will spark somwthing in someone else.

I've been making and coring some disc beads (made with my Pegasus BHB disc roller). I textured and domed some of the beadcaps myself. Had problems with the bead release on a couple of them though, so I shall be looking to get some of Manda's extra strong bead release at Flame Off tomorrow!

This is just for fun - I forgot to show you my fun attempts at playing with JC Herrell type beads after Flame Off. Not a patch on hers, obviously, but it was fun to try them. I also tried some Michal style beads but I didn't enjoy those at all - so much prep work involved for such little reward. Not for me!

I've been playing with my 96coe glass and made some eye murrini so I could do gremlins in it.

This is RW0106 iris dark brown, which is a rather cool colour. It cycles through its striking sequence extremely fast between dark shiny brown and mildly devited blue-white, with other colours in between, even some green. After working a while, it stopped changing colour so much.
I'll work a bit more on the eye murrini, probably add something to give fine dark lines too for more contrast, but I'm pretty pleased with these ones. They're kinda hazel.

This pair of ornate bicones are also the iris dark brown (2 views, same beads). Shows some more of the blues and greens, plus the dark brown.
Here are a few of my 'Ladies what Lunch' the two on the left have faces made of Effetre silver pink 255 and the two on the right are CIM Ginger. I don't always get a perfect finish on the CIM but slightly prefer the colour, whereas the effetre always melts beautifully to a lovely glossy finish but is a little paler!

I believe I have some doodles to show too later today. Nothing wrong with doodling and can give rise to completely new ideas for beads. Nothing ugly about that bead and, if it's still on the mandrell, you can have a think, put it back in a cold kiln and embellish it when it comes up to garaging temperature. If I do this, I leave the bead in the kiln at annealing temperature for at least 30 mins to make sure that there's no temperature gradient within the bead.

I've not posted another of my black and whites because the white seems to have picked up some graphite dust from the marver. I've now dusted it but any thoughts anyone?

The rest was just down to PPP in the application. I found that the faster it went on, the more even the encasing layer :)

I mentioned, in the boro thread, that I was attempting to make a COE 104 mouse similar to the one I made in boro in Emma's class. The kiln has now cooled and this is the result, (http://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL1426/5604171/20864307/409478289.jpg) He's 54mm from nose to tail. He's not quite flat on his base and I nearly forgot to give him ears so had to take him out of the kiln to add them.

Great bugs, Trudi. I have a niece called Beatrice - known as Bea - and I shall make sure she sees that picture!
My boro dragons are still laying... apologies if you've seen enough already, but making (and showing them off) is addictive! There's some nice dichroic and aventurine in a few of these which doesn't show in the photo. The four largest here have been reintroduced to the flame after annealing, to sort out a couple of flaws, to improve shape, and in one case for a fundamental reworking - then of course back in the kiln and fully annealed again. I've done this before with smaller pieces, but was pleased that it was successful with such big ones. The blue one on the left is my largest solid piece so far, about 68mm long until I reshaped it, now about 59mm... and there I think I'm finding the limits - with current firepower - not of what is possible, but of my patience!

I'm still working with crushed glass. This one was fused flat, then slumped into a ceramic fibre mould to make the wiggly edges. I like the way the glass has almost disintegrated in some places as it's slumped - but it's surprisingly sturdy. It's about 3.5 inches across.

Those are beautiful hares Les - they have such expressive faces. It's been such a long time since I posted in here - I shattered my wrist in March which needed reconstructive surgery but I'm gradually getting back to normal. I think my wrist is officially bionic now!
I have a few cast pieces today - the box is my first after encouragement from Becky of Chameleon Designs. It's very simple and nowhere near as elegamt as Becky's but I think I might get addicted. I should have beads tomorrow too :)

Here's my latest fused piece made from vitrigraph pull murrini. This is the top. I used Specrum COE 96 and one of the glasses appears to have devitrified so the top wasn't level. I've ground it down a bit to take off any rough pieces.

I love that vitrigraph pull piece, Pat - like the skin of a giant chameleon. What a fantastic range in this week's gallery - skill and imagination by the bucketload... Wish I had something more original to show than yet another egg!

Great beads this week as well! I have tried some flowers for the first time, and I finally managed to make a striped bead. I have a couple of questions you can help me With. How do i cover the base petals completely With the encasing colour? Its always some white that isn't covered by the transparent. And how do I prevent the base color bleeding out on top of the encasing on the striped bead. This happens near the mandrel.

It's from an orchid plant I was given at Christmas by the parents of my youngest son's partnet. The sepals are a bit out of alignment but on the whole, I'm happy.

Yesterday a shipment of new glass arrived, and I had to try a few of the new glass. This is my very first little lady, using CIM Ghee. It came out a lot darker than expected, but there are some lighter spots that gives promise that it is possible to keep it on the yellow side, which was what I wanted really, not this dark almost brown colour. Quite pleased With the lady, not a goddess yet, but on the right track.

One of the things we had to make at the Wesley Fleming class was a dragonfly. Mine was wobbly and twisted so I attempted to remake it at home. After burning my fingers and dropping it a few times, I finally was able to remake it. It hasn't been annealed so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this one doesn't break. It's tail up because that was what was wanted by Wesley.

The dragonfly is 14.5 cm. Here's the next phase of remakes. My beetle in Wesley's class broke apart completely but I've now made another.

It's a poor beatle as it's only got 5 legs. One fell off and rather than risk this one breaking apart before it was annealed, I've decided to live with it. There are other errors because I find it easier to look at an actual sculpture or picture rather than read my written instructions. That's just the way I am.
I also managed to recreate the red fish this afternoon, (http://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL1426/5604171/24562402/410169311.jpg)The side fin looks a bit odd because it's pointing directly at the camers. The bit of clear on the bottom is just a prop.
At the GBUK meet up at Teresa and Martin's, he did some impromptu demos and a murrini pendant of his really caught my eye. I've tried one or two and this second one is better but nowhere as good as Martin's. I'll just have to keep trying. Maybe I need to get the clear more liquid. The gap in the middle was not intentional ::) ::) ::) Nor was the wonky bail.

I've also been playing with thick silver foil that I've created by hammering out some 1mm diameter wire to make it about 5mm wide. I cut the foil into something like 2mm squares and you can see that they have pretty much stayed in shape rather than balling up the way thin foil does.
The silver is on dark ivory and the blue is a dab of transparent blue

Above. An old friend of ours recently had to have her dog put down, she was devastated but she was over the moon when I said I'd put some of his ashes in a bead for her. She doesn't wear jewellery so I said she could have it as a key ring. ½ a teaspoon of ashes goes a very long way. I've yet to give her the beads but I know it will mean a great deal to her. I've told her they should last at least 3,000 years.

Above. And finally, theses have taken me two days to make so far. They are a mixture of different metals on ivory. I've put a bit of a description about my experiments with silver and copper filings yesterday in the 'show and tell' section. Theses about 22 inches of necklace here so I need to spend another day or so to complete the set.
Anyway I know this isn't up to the high standards I normally see in this spot but it's the best I can do, hopefully I'll get better.

I try to keep a record of what I do as I have a lousy memory, I list where the sand is from and on the other side of the label I have the glass colours. One day when I know what I'm doing I might actually make something half decent.

Wow what a great array of beads Andy - as others have said, they are very well shaped and encased.
For me, I think it's fair to say that my floral beads have improved since my class with Corina Tettinger at the weekend! I decided not to encase the flowers as I rather like them like this, just on the surface. Not bad for a first practice :D

I made a frog he only had one good foot so I have strategically placed my finger over his poor deformed front leg and the photograph flatters him but I did it (with lots of help from superb teacher Corina Tettinger and beautifully hosted course at Mango Beads)
The other frogs were better but he was a proud achievement for me x
Andy-I think that the detail is mostly sitting on the surface, however it is possible to encase 3D detail by dumping on gathers -it's all about heat control so you don't smudge or budge your design.

Here's my last minute Christmas panic, not quite up to the high standard as displayed above but I was happy with it.
Sophie was on Face Time showing her very best friend some of the beads I'd been making and her friend fell in love with my blue and white 'practice beads.'
I'm building up a bit of a collection of beads that act as a catalogue for me as I forget what I've done if I don't keep a record.
Anyway it was decided that Carol should be sent a bracelet in her favourite colour way, but obviously I'd have to make a new set of beads, I wouldn't use the practice beads.
This was announced last night. Now Carol lives in the Connecticut USA and today is of course the last day of posting to the States!

I've never made so many beads in a panic before but they're made, annealed, cleaned, strung, photographed, posted with the custom declaration and hopefully on the motorway heading for the airport as I write this.
Carol is a girl who collects hearts, heart shaped stones etc.
The spotty bead in the 10 o'clock position is encased silver which, in life, looks really good against the blue.
The spots on the white on the bead in the six o'clock position are encased grains of sand from Tresaith beach West Wales, that's the favourite beach where Sophie and Carol spent most of their family holidays together as children, so hopefully it should add a special appeal.
The glass is Medium Lapis with White decoration, the time scale... manic!

I don't know if it's right to post these here but here are some of my practice beads from yesterday. I've been playing at creating 'air-twist' stringers and I've attempted to apply some to beads with very mixed results.
The first thing I've found out is that you have to very gently heat the stringer otherwise they shatter very very easily. The other thing is of course, if you overheat the air-twist the air develops into one or more large bubbles and the air-twist disappears.

The first bead, on the left, is just a plain stringer, the next was an air-twist stringer that also had a couple of colours added inside the stringer and you can see I've over heated it and lost most of the air-twist effect but the colour remains. In the third bead you can see that part of the air-twist has melted out with a trace of air twist visible at the bottom. I completely destroyed the air-twist effect on the fourth bead but as it also had some colours in it I melted it in and removed the air bubbles. The right-hand bead again lost all of the air from the twist as I overheated that one as well.

I managed to apply the air-twist stringer to the bead above without losing the air although the two twists of air are merging into what looks like a single silver ribbon. I found that rather than melting the stringer to cut it off when finishing I found it better to cut it with a pair of wire cutters and then fuse in in, that way I could retain more of the air-twist effect.
I don't think that the idea of applying air-twist stringers to beads has any real merit but I wanted to try something that I haven't seen done elsewhere.

And finally, I'm trying to improve on my positioning control, hot glass isn't very forgiving is it, (third from the left in particular.) I think I must make myself some sort of arm rest. I think I'm getting better but I'm sure it would have been better to have attended some classes rather than getting it from a book and YouTube.
