When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

« on: May 18, 2012, 10:21:15 AM »

I had an epiphany last night. Mainly regarding fugly bead colours, and I figured I'd start a blog on this forum to document my personal progress. Only to find (cue dramatic music) There wasn't a blog option! NOOOOOO!!!  Shocked

The reason I think It would be a wonderful idea is that you can make them public or private, and so everyone can have their own recipe book for what works for their torch and either share with friends, or just keep notes for themselves. When you have a blog on sites dedicated to blogging, you kind of feel like you have to put on a show. It's great for promoting shops, but I personally just want somewhere I can scribble my notes down and I wonder if any other hobbyists feel the same way? I know of another forum that has blog options and it's incredibly successful.

What do you reckon?

I know blogger has an option to make the blog private, although its public by default. Wordpress will have similar options.

There isn't currently an option to add blog facilities on here, I don't know if its available as an add-on, but to do so would probably mean increasing the server space yet again (which we've had to do before as we're such a large forum).

There are plenty of areas on the boards we have already for sharing recipes, what's worked or what hasn't, show and tell, etc.  When the moderator team prune old posts, we always leave relevant information such as this.

If want to blog and share your personal progress with us, you can always add a direct link to your blog in your signature space (in your profile settings)

There is also the fritipedia.

But there is no need to feel like you have to put on a show with a blog, I don't bother being very show-y with mine but because it is public I do find my notes and rambles take on a more structured feeling. It also gives people more of an insight to how you are processing things, which believe me is much better than a parade of ohh look what I made and just listed in my shop.
Actually other than announcements of super new things I don't think any of the fritters blogs that I read are very promotional.

Blogs work better anyway when you are having fun doing it rather than posting for the sake of it.

Ta both of you for your insight  Smiley

I didn't realise it would be a server space nightmare Dawn. Sorry, about that. I thought these websites ran on sparkles and fairy dust. I do forget sometimes there's a team of people behind it all paddling ten to the dozen. I appreciate that you all prolly have full time jobs, lives, families, all that kind of thing and I'm glad you have taken time out to dedicate to this forum.  I have 3 blogs on random accounts, all of which I've forgotten passwords to and I have no idea how to use them. It's a bit like rocket science to me. In fact, rocket science sounds much easier. I wanted a blog because I'm not sure the entire FH community want to hear about the fact that pearl grey glass loves gravity and my turquoise is much happier dancing on the tip of a flame. I guess it's relevant, but you guys will have heard it all a million times before.

Hey Scarlet, I guess I haven't checked enough blogs on FH to see If that is the case. I'm mostly harking back to my time in the etsysphere and It really has stuck with me. Workshops on making your blog look awesome just keep coming round and around......aaaand around. I Will get a blog up and running (and will check yours out too Smiley ), but It the interests of my sanity I'll just type it into word until I can bring myself to locate random passwords/emails and change titles etc!

I think that would make a fab blog Nikki to be perfectly honest!

My blog is rather random;  sometimes it shows off a few Etsy Treasuries.  Sometimes it will be about a current project, or a new piece of glass.  I've blogged about a social media course I've been on, exhibitions I have been to see, other artists, or occasionally random stuff like the time the hot air balloon crash landed on the green in front of my house....  I try to make it relevant to what I do, but also an insight into me.

I agree with Scarlet, I think a good mix is far better than "look at what I just listed" - if I wanted to know that, I would go straight to the shop.

And Nikki, to be honest, I am *not* totally sure how much extra space it would take, etc, but it would certainly involve extra work... for the Frit Happens Fairy for sure  Wink Wink

There's always something we *haven't* come across before! There's no reason you couldn't put a thread in the colour reactions or other show & tell subforums here and update it as you went along, if you wanted.

Me, I love reading about colour reactions and discoveries, here or on blogs  Grin

Cheers Dawn. I am working up to getting a blog in place now. I would have done it today but a rather nasty hangover put pay to that.

Ta Heather, I have indeed done just that!  Cheesy  I had a wonderful play with some dark violet yesterday and it went beautifully silver on me. I posted in the forum about it because I'd love to achieve it again!!  Smiley
