Huh, is that box new? I don't remember it being there when I filled in my policies.

I recently read about this, but wasn't sure what to do, as I have mad stalky ex in the ether looking for us The last thing I need is to put my details out there for all and sundry.

Maybe it is new - I use DH's unit (I do my fusing there) as my postal address which protects my privacy so will probably enter that - postie takes the mail there if I am not in any way which is a nightmare if I order surprise pressies or want to keep my glassy excesses secret

I've updated mine: it was on my website already.
Sue: ugh, not sure what you're meant to do in that situation.

Doesn't pretty much every bit of advice about using the internet say NOT to put your name and address all over the place? I don't see why, potentially, everyone who visits your shop would need to know your address! Surely only buyers would benefit from that information, and then only if they needed it! I won't be putting mine on!

It's madness to be required to put your details where potential nutters can access it! Like Sue, there is someone I need to avoid too, so I won't be posting mine either.

This is where a PO box comes in handy.
I did look in the FAQ and clicked a link to some UK legislation it does mention a geographical address but it also mentions a direct contact email.
Now unless etsy has changed their TOU which basically forbids you from getting customers to contact you outside of etsy surely you can't put an email address in there or really your physical address since people could technically write to you just like an email.
I think also if you trade from your home you don't have to disclose your full address to the public, only to customers but it's late and I can't be bothered to look it up now.

I think I'd rather shut up shop than adhere to these policies if it turns out they're necessary. Our safety is far more important than selling on Etsy. Not just mine and my family, but anybody who has to put themselves into a perhaps difficult position by supplying their details in this way. If Etsy asked to keep it in a database and release it to a buyer on my agreement (just in case!) then fine, but not this openly.

I think the box is new seeing as I've not filled out that one. It is a requirement of the Direct Selling Regs. I have it as a photo on my website so people can read it but bots can't. I agree though Sue, you could be making yourself more vulnerable. Whern the DSR stuff came to the fore a couple of years back I was in an organisation that gave me free legal advice so I used it. The solicitor said you did need to put your address, wherever you traded from and a PO Box was not adequate as it was not a physical address.
Sue, can you not get an injunction against the mad stalky ex? I did for my ex when I divorced, it wasn't as difficult to do as I'd expected - feared for safety blah blah blah.

There are difficulties because of the kids - the man is a wicked violent so and so, and I'd rather just hide from him. Even considering a name change ... So, does this mean I have to shut my shop?

I've not put mine either, and did have it on our website but took it off. Lots of people sell and dont put their address so I'm just leaving it at that till I have to think about it.

As I understand it there is a legal requirement in Europe that your contact details are available to online customers (not just an email). I have an Ebay shop, to which I have had to register all my contact details, but these are not public even on my profile. Some sellers do, however, put their details in their listing.
As a customer I can only get the personal details of the seller via Paypal. Go the any Paypal transaction where you are a customer and click on details, and then click on something like 'print returns label'.
So when I sell the only time the buyer can see my personal details is after they have paid for something. Which is fair enough.
If you are selling via your own website, you are legally obliged to include contact details beyond a 'contact us' email service. Many, many people fail to do this - including members of this forum. Personally I am very wary of buying for a website that does not include this info - unless I am sure that they are bona fida - ie recommended to me.

You're right about the legal requirement Terri, but for the safety of family, it seems unfair and in fact dangerous to have all these details out there for anyone to see. A business premises address would be fine, but a home address, no. So if it's illegal I am wondering how so many of us get away with it then. We had ours on the website for a year then noticed hardly anyone else has a home address and we had to take ours off for similar reasons to Sue and the fact that my daughters life was threatened. How do you then decide what's right? If someone buys something and can then see your address that's fair enough but otherwise, no dont think so.

I am not convinced that address and email have to be publicly displayed on the Etsy page. When we register for accounts for this type of site, don't we have to give our details then? After having a look at the legislation that Etsy directs you to, it still isn't clear, we are selling through Etsy but also directly, if you see what I mean.
I have just put to contact me via Etsy message system until someone tells me I am illegal.
