I use 18 gauge copper wire to make hanging hooks from. I find that when the tack fusing has finished and it's time to clean them up, they are very soft afterwards. Can I do something about this?

That will be because they are annealed, you could try tapping them lightly with a hammer to work harden them, but I'm sure one of the metal smiths will have more of an idea for you.  Smiley

Nichcrome wire stays very strong once fired although the colour isn't great. Copper can become brittle and I tend to keep away from using as hooks although it looks lovely sandwiched between trans glass. Pure silver is obviously an expensive option but again fires well.
