I used to search out bargains on ebay and stock up - but I got p*****d off after about 4 cans and went for bulk propane....

Are those prices for one cannister that lasts about an hour (or so I was told)?  I can get a 6kg propane refil for just a bit more than the B&Q price!  Glad I never bothered with Mapp gas.  B&Q in North Bristol said they didn't stock it, so went straight onto bulk propane.

I've just been up to the local garage and they have 11Kg propane for £24, or in other words over 27 times the gas for double the price of a 400g canister. I think it's fair to say that the canister bought yesterday will probably be the last.  I just need to get an order off for the pipework and regulator.

And although it's been well noted here on the forum I was really surprised how quickly the flame cooled off, I think I managed to get three beads done last night (I'm still just practicing), the fourth just ended up half done and I gave up.  I take it that this doesn't happen with bulk propane and the flame stays a constant temperature.

I had to use Mapp gas for far too long, and am in the last throes before hooking up my big girls torch - this does mean, however, that I have researched intensively for the cheapest possible price.  Tools4trade are the cheapest I found, at £8.47 for the more expensive bottle, it's a pound cheaper for another but the fittings are different and often faulty, and the pressure is rubbish on the cheaper one.  With VAT and delivery for three bottles I used to pay £34.84.  I never found anything less, sorry.  As soon as you get the opportunity to go to bulk, I would do so.

I found the same.  Make sure you have at least two at the same time to swap over.

Slightly OT but I managed to get a Flogas 11kg cylinder off Freecycle today, nearly full and (despite the explanation the lady gave me) is the right kind to attach to my torch.  I thought it was the BBQ kind with the top fit regulator but no.  I was going to use it up on the BBQ (in winter ) and swap it for the right one at the corner shop.  And as I came in from a disasterous hour's torching what happened?  The Calor gas bottle ran out .... now I have a spare.

Our local recycling centre usually has gas cylinders you can get for free, if you can find one that has a local stockist.  Have discovered that my petrol station will swap any Calor for a similar size - so could have got a free butane from the tip and swapped it for a propane - now they tell me.
