When you are using the search box, are you searching from the "Home" page? If not, it will only search the board you are in, and not the whole forum.

When you do a search, it will only bring up one post of each thread, not the whole thread, so you have to click on the post title to read the whole discussion.

Using dichroic as an example

If you only type in dichroic, it will show all references to it, of which there will be quite a few.  As a comparison, run a search using 104 dichroic and it will return less.  

Continuing to use dichroic as an example, as well as 104 dichroic try dichroic 104 or dichro as a lot of people use that term. Sometimes, it's also worth trying alternative, wrong spellings for words, if they are commonly mis-spelt.
