GBUK Competition @ Flame Off, Towcester 2010

As mentioned in a recent GBUK Newsflash, we are delighted to be holding a NEW glass bead competition for all GBUK members at the Flame Off 2010, Towcester.
As promised, here is the formal announcement! We have made a few changes - there are now two themes, three categories, and we have amended the submission date to provide a fairer timetable for entrants and the judges. The purpose of the competition is to build an impressive temporary collection of GBUK members work, this is a wonderful opportunity to showcase your work at future events and we thought that competition quality beads would be a great way to do this, and there's the added bonus of some wonderful prizes! So, if you enter the competition we would like to retain your bead(s) for a year or so - more details are in the entry form sent via email to all members.

The two themes to choose from are 'A Day At The Races' or 'Reflections'.

There will be three categories: -

Beginner
Intermediate
Advanced

Judging will take place at the Flame Off by Ray Skene, Sharon Peters and another judge (yet to be announced)

The prizes are as follows: -

Beginner - £50.00 Off-Mandrel voucher and 50g pots of their complete frit range

Intermediate - £50.00 Tuffnell Glass voucher and a selection of glass rods including; 1kg Effetre Opaque, 1kg Effetre Transparent, The Spring Collection, Think Pink Collection, New Mystics Collection, CiM Mixed Pack and a Double Helix Mixed Pack

Advanced - £50.00 Plowden & Thompson voucher and a selection of Plowden and Thompson glass rods, dichroic and frits

There will be £25.00 vouchers from one of our prize sponsors for runners-up prizes in each of the above categories

There will also be an additional prize, chosen by public vote at the Flame Off, which will be a €50.00 Frit & Glas voucher and a selection of their frits and handmade murrini.

All of the rules and further information is contained in the entry form.

Entries must be submitted by post along with a completed entry form to arrive no later than Wednesday 14th April 2010.

GBUK would like to thank these suppliers for providing prizes and for their much valued support:

So what constitutes a beginner, intermediate or advanced bead maker?

Ahhh...the million dollar question!   Wink

Kate has done a fantastic job producing the entry form (it should be attached to the email I sent out earlier this evening to all members)

It lists the categories:

Beginner
May have taken an introduction to beadmaking course, or may
never have made a bead before, usually up to 1 years experience.

Intermediate
May have taken classes in beadmaking, or may be self-taught, usually
1 to 4 years experience of making beads on a regular basis. Able to
make well balanced beads in varying shapes using gravity and a
marver. Able to encase with few or no air bubbles and repeat bead
designs. Able to put dots and designs on a bead with control over
placement and consistency of size.

Advanced
Long term experience with glass, skills may be the same as
intermediate but more developed and refined with precise control of
hot glass. You may have begun to develop a distinct personal style in
your beadmaking, usually more than 3 years experience.

These are guidelines only, there is no definitive categorisation for
lampworking skills.

I hope this helps!  Grin

Oh god I was dreading that question  Grin  Grin

It's so hard to define, but at the same time it isn't fair to pit bead makers of very different abilities against eachother, it puts off the less experienced. I read through lots of old threads on this subject and after much deliberation came up with the guidelines above, but it's very much to the entrant to assess themselves really. If anyone would like any assistance drop me a line and I'll do my best to help out.
