Hiya,
Second time its done it now, but my kiln keeps over shooting the set 510 temp when on a full ramp - any ideas ?

mine varies around abour 50 degrees
goes down too 475 sometimes then back up to 525. or is it loads?

mine goes up and down a bit but not as much as yours Anna, mines never by more than 10 |

Yeah, on the first full rame to 520 its going upto about 560 maybe a bit more, but the alarm kicks in and lets me know. After ive pressed the start button it comes back down again, then when i override the hold part to make it go up to 520 for annealling it does it again, maybe not as much about 10-20 more.
I suppose i just expected it to stay at the given temp, give or take a few as it trys to regulate itself.

Mine varies but I've never really taken much notice of by how much. I assumed it was the way the regulator was set up at the factory.

Mine did that too Nicky went as high as 560 then the HDTE message came up, and in the end I had to adjust the first ramp to heat it up a bit more slowly. Since I did it it hasn't done it since. I figured mine didn't like getting that hot that quickly  Mind you it's having wobblies of a different kind now, flippin thing! |

Maybe because it's new, Nicky? Mine used to get up to temp really fast, it takes a little longer now. Maybe try programming a slightly slower ramp?
Oh, and opening and closing the bead door makes it fluctuate, I just open my bead door and leave it till I'm finished, then close it as far as poss.

Mine is overshooting too. Is it contagious?? I used my kiln for the first time today. I got the HtdE message, so I added a segment to the beginning of the schedule that someone (Helen P?) kindly posted somewhere in this forum. I added this: Ramp1 700C Temp1 410 C Hold1 0.10 then; Ramp2 FULL Temp2 510 C Hold2 6.00 Ramp3 FULL Temp3 520C Hold3 60mins Ramp4 78 C Temp4 371 C Hold5 00mins Ramp5 0000 Still with me? After running this schedule I got the HdtE message again. Any suggestions anyone?  I'm making it up as I go along |

I work for a controls company and know quite a lot about control theory...
My assumption is that the controllers on most kilns are not "tuned" to the kiln (i.e they are probably just using the standard control settings)
Having tuned a kiln controller (for Sarah (silverlemon)) I can tell you that they are very difficult to control, basically I am not surprised that they overshoot when ramping up, one way to avoid it is to make the first stage a ramp up at a "relatively" slow rate (say 20-40deg/min or less) this will ensure that the controller doesn't just blast the kiln with full on heat for 10-15 mins while it heats up.
If you do a ramp up to start, it is very unlikely that the kiln will overshoot.
