Hoping someone might be able to advise here, if i wanted to make a silver piece with some areas lower than others and fill those areas with gold clay, is that possible and if so what order would i do it in, would I fire the silver first or add the gold in and then fire all at once ?!

thanks in hope  Smiley

*Edited to add* I found this on cooksons site which says it can be added to fired silver to give gold colour has anyone used it and is it any good ?? It seems a good bit cheaper than buying the clay version

Gold CLay is fairly pricey - have you thought about using Gold Paste to fill your areas in with gold ? Its not possible to fire gold in a silver piece as the firing for Gold Clay is 990C which is above the melting point of the silver. Typically in Gold/Silver combination pieces the Gold is fired first and then the silver clay piece is built around it.

Hi Becky

You can mix silver and gold clays together, I've done it as part of the PMC Level 2 projects.  You don't have to fire the silver first or anything, you can fire them together at the same time - although it would probably depend on your design as to how its best to do it.

There's some great information here

Give me a shout if you need any other info

I stand corrected. Maybe it differs between the brands?

I always thought with Art Clay Silver that you couldnt fire together because the firing temp of gold is so high. I follow the instructions to the letter with Art Clay Gold as its so expensive.

Becky, we just got 1g to play with on the Level 2 Class!!  I used silver paste to stick the gold piece to my silver piece - if I can find it when I get to the studio I'll photo it.  I managed to have some left over which I've used as paste since!  You can make 1g stretch a long way if you have to!!!  I think the PMC one comes in a 3g pack, but can't remember.

Emma - I've never tried with Art Clay so I'm not sure of the firing temps, but if you look at the PMC link it just says that 900 is for 10 mins, if you reduce the temp then just fire it for longer and it gives times - like you said though if AC don't give that info its too expensive to experiment with!!
