I use the levels a lot more than the brightness/contrast bit.  You can lighten the image, but then put more depth back in using the left hand slider like Sarah's done with the contrast.

Cool I will give it a go. I generaly use the auto level and then faff about with the brightness and contrast, but I am never never happy with the finished photo!
