My new minor and oxycon arrived today  :) , have just unpacked the box but now feeling a bit nervous...all seems scarier than the hothead... numpty questions coming up...!

There are two lemon shaped clips supplied, and also one of the ones that has a small screw to tighten it (jubilee clip?). I guess the lemon shaped ones are to fix the hoses to the torch, but how do you tighten those ones? Do you pinch them with pliers or something?

And what is the jubilee clip for??  ???

Oh, and do you leave the regulator at the same setting as for the hothead?

I will have to wait until tomorrow to get set up, but it would help if I had more idea of what to do! Thanks!

Madam Steph

There is an old posting by Sean (Off Mandrel) where he details how to set up the regulator.
I followed it myself when I set up my Cricket and I had/still have no probs.

I'll try and find it for you

The lemon clips do have to have a pinch with pliers, however my car mechanic gave me some small jubilee clips (I got my Tuffies Oxycon second hand) and they did the job perfectly in the absence of the lemon clips

Ok..it's an old posting but I have copied and pasted:

5lbs of pressure is 1/3 bar - much less than your hothead!
To set correct pressure for a dual fuel torch on an oxycon:

  • set it all up
  • with oxycon off, and oxy valve shut, open gas valve on torch
  • with lit lighter/candle/other live flame held just under and in front of torch nozzle, open regulator until gas lights.
  • adjust regulator until flame is about 6" long
  • turn off gas valve at torch
  • start oxycon, and open oxy valve at torch
  • when oxy line is bled, turn off oxy at torch, light gas
  • add oxy and adjust both for neutral flame

Whenever I set up a new system, I follow the list above. It means you have set your gas reg with no drama, and your gas reg should then be set for good, or at least for that gas bottle. No further reg adjustment necessary, just melting glass!

Hope that helped, and I'm not trying to teach egg-sucking...

Hope this helps

thank you, that is very helpful !  :) I have been searching for info but had not seen that.

Nothing seems to come with instructions these days - thank goodness for FH!

Hi,

I use a set of these on the lemon clips better than a pair of pliers as it gives an even crimp http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=pincers&tag=mh0a9-21&index=diy&hvadid=21806309&ref=pd_sl_qg1fuzex5_e.

I also always turn both my regulator and gas off at the end of each session, it just seems safer to turn the both off.

Yep I drain everything at the  end of each session

With torch lit.
Turn of gas bottle tap.
allow flame to die
Turn off gas regulator
Turn down oxy at torch
Turn off Oxy con - Oxycon will carryon emptying via torch for a few minutes.

undo gas bottle, and store safely - I'm on quick releases.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Tuffnells were very helpful when I emailed today too, so I think I'm ready to set up now, just need the time, have to cook tea first  >:( , so many things get in the way of making beads!!

Hi,

Our local ALDI has the cutters that will crimp the lemon clips for a couple of quid this week so if your after a set it may be worth a visit to your local shop.
